What’s on My Desk: Allie Beckwith
Fashion photographer Allie Beckwith has her work routine down pat and has crafted a workspace at Saint John’s ConnexionWorks that reflects the way she works and helps her stay productive.
She told us a few things about what it is that makes her workspace unique.
Where is your workspace?
I work out of ConnexionWorks in Uptown Saint John. I also have a home office but it’s more of a studio for painting. I work out of ConnexionWorks during the weekdays and sometimes late into the evening. It’s a great environment to be in during the week. There are always people around doing big things and speakers holding business seminars and a lot of helpful resources. I end up networking on the daily right from my desk.
Did you put time/effort into making it into what you wanted?
Here at ConnexionWorks you can really make the space your own. I move things around, rearrange my workspace as needed. Everything is on wheels, so the flexibility is great. I’m always placed by the window and love looking at the gorgeous view of Uptown Saint John.
What sort of feel do you go for with your space?
Bright. I need a bright, positive space to work in.
What do you surround yourself with to help you be productive?
I always drink one coffee a day. I drink it in the morning and it really helps me get moving. I’ll sip on that while doing the morning tasks like catching up with emails and posting on social media. I always listen to music and I have a few playlists on 8tracks that are my go-to’s for weekday work. I like working in natural light for editing, retouching or drawing. I keep a lot of pens on hand and sketch when an idea comes to mind. Also, I live by to-do lists and love listening to podcasts or books while I am retouching and editing.
What sorts of things can you not have around?
Dark chocolate covered anything. I promise I will mindlessly eat the whole bag. Also silence. I cannot work in silence.
What inspires your space?
I think being a fashion photographer, I am always attracted to spaces that resemble a studio or a gallery. A blank canvas that you’re the boss of. I like blank space and testing out different things in that space. Especially with my new company, AKA DECOR, it’s definitely playing a part in my attention to detail and creativity.
