Comptroller

The University of New Brunswick (UNB) offers undergraduate and graduate programs in more than 75 disciplines and continuing education in a variety of fields.  With one of the best student-to-faculty ratios of Canada’s comprehensive universities, UNB offers world-class programs while maintaining a small-university experience for the 6,700 and 1,850 students on the Fredericton and Saint John campuses respectively. UNB employs some 3,000 talented full- and part-time staff, including faculty, support staff and students and has total annual revenues of approximately $300 million. The Comptroller and staff in Financial Services aim to support the university’s mission by providing timely, reliable and responsive financial and related administrative services and information to the UNB community, and in so doing, to add value to the decision-making processes of the university related to the attainment, allocation and utilization of resources. The Comptroller and staff in Financial Services process all financial transactions at the University, including payroll, accounts payable, and student accounts on the two campuses. This also includes monitoring and ensuring compliance with University policies and external regulations as well as ensuring that an adequate system of internal control exists and remains effective in safeguarding the University’s assets.

Reporting to the Vice-President (Administration & Finance), the Comptroller is responsible for directing and managing the overall financial operations of UNB to support its objectives of financial resilience and responsibility. Working collaboratively with the Financial Services team, the Comptroller ensures the efficient operation of the University-wide Financial Services units including accounts payable, payroll, procurement, student accounts and receivables, risk management, insurance, internal audit, financial and general accounting, administrative financial systems, and fixed assets. The Comptroller drives both success and sustainability through: improving the process and timelines for the preparation of annual audited financial statements and analysis; participating in enhancing the clarity, timeliness and effectiveness of quality interim financial updates and analysis; expanding and enhancing risk management framework, internal audit planning and activities; overseeing management of the ERP including leading a significant rejuvenation of the system; and enhancing development and delegation within Financial Services. A key member of the Financial Services leadership team, the Comptroller contributes to the building of strong internal relationships and supports and advises Board committees, senior management and faculty departments.

As the ideal candidate, you are a self-motivated, high-performing and hands-on leader, who is highly analytical, savvy and able to deliver. With a post-secondary degree in Business, Commerce or Finance, accompanied by a professional accounting designation and, ideally, several years’ experience working in the academic sector or with large enterprise financial systems, you possess both finely tuned business and financial acumen. A confident leader with superb people management skills, you have superb people management skills and a proven ability to help improve organizational performance and efficiency through effective mentorship, internal and external reporting, internal controls, budgeting and positive relationships.
