Thirty-Two Businesses Finalists For Moncton Awards That Will ‘Celebrate Local’
DIEPPE – Assomption Life, Bonté Foods and Sonic Image are among 32 companies nominated across 10 categories for the 2018 Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton Business Excellence Awards, it was announced Tuesday.
Genevieve Laforge, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Chamber, said 71 businesses were nominated for the awards this year.
“It shows how vivacious the community is,” she said. “People nominated themselves but also nominated other companies, which is wonderful and it really shows that our economy is going well, people are happy and they want to celebrate their success.”
This year’s awards will follow a “Celebrate Local” theme inspired by campaigns like For the Love of New Brunswick.
“There seems to be a movement now that people are getting a lot more conscious of how important it is to celebrate local services and products and companies. We felt it was important this year to be part of that movement and celebrate local and be proud of who we are and what we can do and what we can achieve together as a community,” she said.
Amber Richards, whose events management business Amber Effects Events was nominated for the first time under the emerging business category, is one of those local entrepreneurs. She said she’s happy to have her name next to other great local businesses.
“I think it’s tremendous to get recognized for a business that I just started three years ago based on a passion. I love connecting with people and bringing people together through events, that’s what my business does and it’s growing, and I’m having fun doing it,” she said.
For the Celebrate Local theme, Director of Communications and Policy Sylvain Montreuil said the Chamber will launch an initiative where it asks local businesses and their customers to share a picture of their favourite local shop or business with the hashtag #CelebrateLocal2018 on social media.
The 10 best pictures will be presented at the gala and voted on by attendees for the prize of a $200 Visa gift card, and one business will receive a Visa gift card of $200 for being the most “connected” business in Greater Moncton.
This year, a new Healthy Workplace Award will also be presented to an organization or a company based on their commitment and effort to offer a better place to work to its employees through programs, raising awareness and a supportive environment.
Meanwhile, the People’s Choice Award award will be given to a business that the public feels is most deserving, based on online votes that will close on October 17. All companies that submitted a nomination for a 2018 award are in the running.
The Excellence Awards will be held on October 24 at Casino NB. Below is the full list of finalists for this year’s awards, which were chosen by a panel of five independent judges from the business community:
