The SHAD Entrepreneurship Program Is Coming to Mount Allison University
SACKVILLE– Canada’s award-winning enrichment and entrepreneurship program, SHAD, is coming to Mount Allison University, the organization announced Thursday.
The program, based on the STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering arts and math), brings top high school students to university campuses across the country every July. In 2018, Mount Allison will become SHAD’s sixteenth university host campus and the second in the province joining University of New Brunswick.
“Mount Allison offers a high-quality liberal arts and sciences education where students can combine different disciplines to help prepare them for any career path,” said Robert Campbell, Mount Allison University’s president and vice-chancellor, in a release. “We are pleased to welcome the SHAD summer program for high school students to our campus in 2018.”
SHAD Mount Allison will bring participants to live on campus in Bennett House and will showcase Mount Allison’s facilities in an all-encompassing experience. With Sackville situated at the hub of three Maritime Provinces, SHAD participants will experience a breadth of maritime activities and culture. Students will also connect with academic and business leaders and support the growing culture of innovation there.

“SHAD was an amazing experience that I am still benefiting from today,” said Celine Kavanaugh who is from Grand Falls and attended the program this past July. “I’m visually impaired but found SHAD has a place for every student with a passion and drive to learn no matter the challenges they face in their daily lives. SHAD is a place where you meet so many like-minded people. We are all different in our own ways but SHAD allows you to feel empowered by your differences and learn to fully appreciate your unique qualities and skills.”
The organization says the Government of New Brunswick was a key factor in the new partnership. In August 2016, the Province announced a five-year, $750,000 investment to ensure more students in the province gain access to SHAD.
“SHAD has had a connection to New Brunswick almost from day one,” said Tim Jackson, president and CEO of SHAD. “The longstanding support from the Province has helped us expand the program and offer more opportunities for students like Celine to continue to benefit for years to come.”
SHAD is open to students in grades 10, 11 and 12 and is currently accepting applications for summer 2018 from now until November 20.
