Saint John Rock Climbing Gym Opening This Weekend
SAINT JOHN – Owners of Moncton’s Fit Rocks, Atlantic Canada’s largest rock climbing gym, are gearing up to open its Saint John location this weekend.
The new gym at 40 Ashburn Lake Road will have its grand opening on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Fit Rocks co-owner Derek MacIntyre said in an interview with Huddle back in November that part of the decision to open a Saint John was because of the established rock climbing community in the area.
“There’s also a lot of outdoor climbing near Saint John so there is a community of established climbers there already,” he said. “We’re also positioned in a location that should draw from Saint John, Rothesay and Quispamsis, so we’re hoping to [pull in people from] communities around there.”
MacIntyre said at the time that the Saint John gym will based on the Moncton location.
“We’ll have an area that’s very kid-friendly and beginner friendly,” says MacIntyre. “It will have a video game wall, a harness wall, stuff we do birthday parties with. Then we’ll have a training area and a full-bouldering area, which is where all the climbing is. The majority of the gym will be in the bouldering area, similar to our Moncton location.”
On Grand Opening weekend, day passes will be 50 per cent off, and anyone that spends $30 can get a one-week membership, and Fit Rocks will donate $15 towards the Red Cross’ flood relief efforts.
Mayor Don Darling and MP Wayne Long will compete in a climbing challenge to kick off the grand opening at 10 am, May 19
