Read’s Newsstand & Cafe Is Closing In Downtown Fredericton
FREDERICTON – A downtown institution and community gathering place is closing at the end of the month.
Read’s Newsstand & Cafe announced on its Facebook page late Tuesday that it would shut down at the end of June.
“Hey coffee fans, we have some sad news to share: for personal health reasons we’ve decided to close down the business at the end of the month. We’ve had a great run and enjoyed serving our many regular customers, meeting new friends, and connecting with a community of wonderful people. Many thanks to the amazing staff, current and former, who have been such an important part of everyone’s lives. You’ll be missed, best wishes to everyone!”
The expressions of support and disappointment began immediately on the page. Here’s a sampling of the thoughts people shared:
“I spent the better part of a decade serving coffee, learning important skills, but more importantly, making lasting connections and friendships with people in the community. I will always look back fondly on my time there and Read’s will be missed!!”
“This is so sad. Mom, Dad and I have been regulars for years. We have loved all of the staff and Brendan so very much. We will miss our morning family; both staff and regulars. It is such a welcoming, warm place to meet new people and visit with old friends. Please take good care of yourselves and keep in touch if you can. Love you guys.”
“Read’s has been an institution in my life since I moved to Fredericton. I often went 3 times a day. I’ve had everything from interviews to meetings to coffee dates and some of the best times just on a walk through with friends, and you stocked my ridiculous Raccoon book – you will be so missed. Wishing you all of the best.”
Huddle reached the owner by phone, but he didn’t want to talk at this time.
