After nine months of business in Moncton, Fit Rocks Climbing Gym, a rock climbing gym, has announced a second location in Saint John.
Since opening last March in the Hub City, Fit Rocks owner Derek MacIntyre says the business has been a success.
“It’s been great,” he says. “The community has really embraced it and adopted it well. We’ve got a lot of members. We do a lot of birthday parties, kids stuff, adults stuff.”
It’s this early success that led to the decision to expand. MacIntyre says they did market research and chose Saint John for their second location because of the population and an established rock climbing community.
“There’s also a lot of outdoor climbing near Saint John so there is a community of established climbers there already,” he says. “We’re also positioned in a location that should draw from Saint John, Rothesay and Quispamsis, so we’re hoping to [pull in people from] communities around there.”
The new Fit Rocks location will be located on Ashburn Lake Road, just off of Rothesay Avenue in East Saint John. It will be very similar to the Moncton location.
“We’ll have an area that’s very kid friendly and beginner friendly,” says MacIntyre. “It will have a video game wall, a harness wall, stuff we do birthday parties with. Then we’ll have a training area and a full-bouldering area, which is where all the climbing is. The majority of the gym will be in the bouldering area, similar to our Moncton location.”
MacIntyre says they are still in the design phase and working on the building schedule, but they hope to have to new location opened in March or April of next year.
“We’re super excited,” he says. “I think the community is going to really like what we bring. I know that people have tried to open a gym there or talk about opening a gym there for a while and we’re excited to be the ones to do it and finally give the community what I think they want.”
