One of the Best Ice Cream Shops in Canada Is Run By Students in Sussex
SUSSEX – Sully’s Ice Cream Parlour has been named one of the 15 best ice cream shops in Canada by Yellow Pages Canada one of only three shops in the Maritimes to make the list.
Since 1998, 55 students have worked at Sully’s, which creates over $22,000 in student wages each summer. Over the last 10 years Sully’s has awarded over $75,000 to students through the Sully’s Bursary Program.
“We are most proud that our team of student staff were recognized for their friendly, welcoming and outgoing approach to serving visitors to Sully’s,” said Ryan Sullivan, Sully’s founder and social entrepreneur.
According to Shannon O’Donnell, the author of the list, a number of factors were considered, including quality, uniqueness and flavour, ambience, customer service and the value for the price.

“Sully’s friendly staff serves 44 different flavours of ice cream in homemade waffle cones, with a charming sprinkle of nostalgia in the old train station in downtown Sussex,” wrote O’Donnell.
The shop employees many students each summer, and it’s a family affair for the Pearsons. Hilary – the shop manager – has worked at Sully’s for seven summers and is entering her final year at Mount Allison University. Her sister, Laura, worked there for seven summers, four as manager. Their younger sister, Lanie, is celebrating her fourth summer at Sully’s and is the assistant manager.
“It’s a great place to work,” said Hilary. “Not only do I get to meet people from around the world who visit Sussex, but I gain valuable experience on how to run a business.”
The other students on staff this summer are Camryn Seymour, Nick Moeller and Jenna Reid. Two new students will be joining the team in August.
The funds for Sully’s Bursary Program are raised through a profit-sharing program at the ice cream shop and through donations from customers. These bursaries are distributed at the end of each summer to staff to help them reach their academic goals.
Sully’s is open from May 1 to Labour Day weekend, the shop offers 44 flavours of hard ice cream with house made waffle cones and is located in the historic train station on Broad Street in Sussex, New Brunswick.
The other two Maritime shops that made the list were COWS in Charlottetown and Dee Dee’s in Halifax.
