New Poll Says Majority of Saint John Residents Support Irving HQ Development
HALIFAX–A new poll from Corporate Research Associates points to a high degree of public support for Irving Oil’s plans to build an 11-storey headquarters building in Saint John’s uptown core.
The survey of 400 Saint John area residents found that over eight in ten (84 per cent) support this development, while one in ten (8 per cent) oppose, and a similar number do not know or do not offer an opinion on the matter (8 per cent).
The building met opposition from some over concerns it did not meet the city’s heritage conservation bylaws, which were ultimately changed to accommodate the development.
“Contrary to criticism of Irving Oil’s decision to build its headquarters on land next to the Imperial Theatre, a resounding majority of residents living in the Greater Saint John area actually support the Company’s decision,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of CRA.
The poll’s overall results are accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
