NBCC to Send Eight Students and Apprentices to Skills Canada National Competition
FREDERICTON–NBCC will be sending eight of their students and apprentices to the 2016 Skills Canada National Competition in Moncton from June 5-8.
The Skills Canada Competition is held every year to recognize talented young people and spread awareness of the trades as viable career options. This year will be the first time the competition is held in New Brunswick.
Since January 2016, approximately 250 New Brunswick students and apprentices have participated in the provincial competition to determine who would make up the 40 member New Brunswick team.
The eight representatives from NBCC who earned their places on the New Brunswick team are Stephanie MacLean, Joel MacNevin, Jason Bonnell, Calvin Getchell, Gheorghe Apopei, Michael Joseph McGuire, Pascal Marquis and Sam Esson. These skilled workers will compete in categories ranging from IT and welding to machining and masonry.
“On behalf of NBCC, I’d like to say how proud we are of our students and apprentices heading to the national competition,” said president and CEO of NBCC Marilyn Luscombe.
“This year’s competition is particularly special because we will have a home crowd cheering our team on. New Brunswickers will be able to see first-hand how very skilled NBCC students and apprentices are, thanks to the support of employer partners who provide them with training experiences and opportunities like this.”
More than 500 young people from across Canada will participate in over 40 skilled trade and technology categories in the national competition next week.
