Loblaw Spokesperson Says Plan to Close Stores Won’t Have ‘Much Impact’ in N.B.
SAINT JOHN – A spokesperson for Loblaw says the company isn’t yet releasing a list of planned store closures, but he said there shouldn’t be a large impact on its operations in New Brunswick.
“We are not disclosing specific locations at this time, however, I don’t anticipate much impact in New Brunswick,” wrote Mark Boudreau, Director of Corporate Affairs for Loblaw Atlantic, in an e-mail to Huddle.
In Atlantic Canada, Bourdreau said Loblaw operates Atlantic Superstores, NoFrills, Your Independent Grocer (formerly Save Easy) and Shoppers Drug Marts, as well as Dominion in Newfoundland.
The company announced Wednesday that it will close 22 unprofitable stores under various banners and formats, but it didn’t say which ones and where they were located.
The move comes as Loblaw more than doubled its third-quarter profit compared with a year ago as its results were boosted by the sale of its gas bar business.
Revenue totalled $14.19-billion in the third quarter of 2017, up from $14.14 in the third quarter of 2016.
Last month, Loblaw announced it would cut 500 corporate and store-support jobs.
The company also announced plans to launch a home delivery service with California-based Instacart in Toronto in December and Vancouver beginning in January of next year. That program could ultimately expand to 20 – 25 cities countrywide.
